Everything's Archie...again!

Yeah, I'm a throw-back to the old days of my comic-reading youth. Aside my Spider-Mans, Batmans, Supermans, Wonder Womans and the Flashes sat my Archies in a long, white box, seemingly ostracized and forgotten. I picked up two long boxes at a sidewalk sale in the old antique district of Dalton, Illinois way back in about 1981 for a whopping $15 for both boxes! They had Silver Age Archies, Bronze, Pep, Jugheads, Reggie & Pals, Betty & Veronicas...I had the gamut. I was quite happy to acquire such a great collection and all in amazingly-nice shape!

And they they were gone, forever lost in the annals of time and comic book discord.

I'm not ashamed to say I miss my old Archies and remember vividly some of the better tales within those wonderfully kid-friendly pages. Aside from the obvious safety in Archie comics, they were just great reading, I don't care what anyone says. The demographic has certainly changed for me, a guy pushing 40, but I still find enjoyment in those books, especially the Archie wedding issues currently on sale. And now, after many years of missing out on those old stories IDW Publishing is going to be issuing Archie books in collected works this summer!

Starting this May, we'll see the first book released called Archie: The Best of Dan DeCarlo Volume One. This book will be a best-of Archie comics through the years and should be a very nice addition to even the lesser-involved Archie fan's collection.  Dan DeCarlo's good-girl art of the 40s and 50s still resonates today as some of the best comic book work, not to mention the most recognizable of almost any artist. When you see a DeCarlo piece, you absolutely know it's him without thinking twice. He's often imitated but never duplicated. After that we'll see Archie: The Classic Newspaper Comics, Volume One, which will be a hardcover collection of 1940's strips. that makes its way to us in June. July will give us an Archie: Pureheart the Powerful in TPB (trade paperback) form, so this is going to be an exciting year for Archies fans.

IDW is right up there with Fantagraphics in reprinting some of the old newspaper strips and stories, as well as Doctor Who, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek comics. They're one of the better comics companies out there.

You can read more about these books here. If you're in my neck of the woods (Chicagoland-area), visit All-American Comics in Evergreen Park to find out more about these and other great books from yesterday, today and tomorrow! Carl knows all!
