Kitsch'n, located in Chicago's Roscoe Village on the North Side, is a fun restaurant to bring the kids, and has been a local favorite since 1998. Kitsch'n's decor is, well, kitschy -- the seating is made up of vintage Formica tables, and the place was decorated by someone who definitely was a child of the 70s. Kitsch'n is absolutely filled with memorabilia from the era, from vintage beer signs, lava lamps, TV show pictures, and old lunch boxes. Speaking of those lunch boxes, order the kid's "Lunch Box" -- which includes any entrée, 2 sides, a drink, and a toy -- and they'll serve the meal in one, a very cute touch.
The Kid's Menu consists of standard fare, whether it's pancakes or "egg in a basket" for brunch, or mac n' cheese or quesadilla for lunch/dinner. But where Kitsch'n stands out is their offerings of sides goes beyond plopping a mound of french fries on the plate, perfect for parents wanting healthier options for their children. Current sides include steamed broccoli, mandarin oranges, steamed mixed vegetables, seedless grapes, curly fries, mashed potatoes, or steamed peas. There's plenty to eat for the grown ups, too -- my favorite is the "chilaquiles", a mix of scrambled eggs, tortillas, salsa, cheese, and just the right amount of heat. Kitsch'n bills it as "the ultimate hangover breakfast", but it also qualifies as "the ultimate my kids woke me up too early with loud noise breakfast" as well.
One word of warning when bringing the kids, however -- Kitsch'n's dining room is tight, so leave the stroller behind. There also can be a bit of a wait at peak times, so judge the crankiness of your toddler accordingly beforehand.
