The amazing underdog success story of Paranormal Activity proves that a cleverly crafted horror film doesn't need buckets of blood to be successful. With Halloween less than a week away, we'll be posting our nominations for the 13 creepiest movies of all time--films that relied far less for their scares on Kensington gore than our own dark fears of the unknown.
#13: The Others (2001)
Having always found the perfectly poised Nicole Kidman to be supernaturally annoying, the fact that she spends most of The Other's 104-minute running time in various stages of torment and distress is reason enough for me to recommend the film, however the 2001 thriller is also a frightfully good scare. Partially inspired by Jack Clayton's superior horror classic, The Innocents (1961), the film tells the story of a neurotic young mother (Kidman) whose white-knuckled grasp on sanity slips even further when she begins to suspect her rambling Jersey estate to be haunted by malevolent spirits. Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar won eight Goya Awards for this spine-chilling tale of supernatural terror that has one of the most unexpected endings since Don't Look Now (1973), and The Sixth Sense (1999). Even I never saw it coming.
The Others is available for rental from Netflix and Blockbuster.com, and is also available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray at Amazon.com. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and frightening moments.
