Having returned to America after 15 years abroad living in social democracies, one of the hardest things for me to wrap my head around is the fact that we do not have a centralized free health care system with, what my friend Henry calls "dental and mental."

At least here in New Orleans, community based volunteer organizations are picking up the slack. Headwaters Relief is just such an organization. Not only have they been involved with the physical rebuilding process of gutting homes and collecting supplies, they are now offering free mental health counseling.

No matter how much we rebuild the physical city, people are still suffering from all kinds of mental disorders associated with Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath. This leads to crime, drug abuse, homelessness and a host of other social ills. People who are "right in the head" can overcome, achieve and inspire. I urge you to support Headwaters Relief by visiting their website and donating what you can.
