Tropical Storm Ida now has winds of 70 mph and is passing over the warm waters of the western Caribbean. Very little wind sheer is expected overnight, which should allow Ida to become a hurricane by morning. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Grand Cayman Island. A Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula, including the popular vacation resorts of Cancun and Cozumel. This means that tropical storm conditons (winds over 40 mph) are expected within 24 hours, but hurricane conditions (winds 75 mph and higher) could develop within 36 hours. The tropical storm force winds extend 140 away from the center, so this is a pretty large storm. While it is expected to pass between western Cuba and Cancun, next up is The Gulf of Mexico. There it will encounter cooler waters and perhaps more wind sheer, This will begin to weaken and turn the storm, making the foreast track and intensity difficult to pin down now.
