Get mad, please.  Another puppy mill rescue, this one more bizarre than the last. A chimpanzee on the loose was the catalyst that drew the police to yet another illegal puppy farm. Missouri, no surprise there. Over 200 dogs and several primates were originally found, but by the time the Humane Society arrived the next day, almost all were gone. Turned loose, pirated out, or killed. Who knows? Your imagination is no match. When one is so low as to treat animals this inhumanely, there are no limits. I also feel sorry for the primates found. Intelligent beings-heaven only knows what they endured.

Dogs at puppy farms/mills are forced to breed. Every time they come into heat, they are forced to breed. Until finally, because of age and health, the litters become smaller or cease altogether. The female is then usually shot, or is half dead already. Merely a tool to be disposed of, garbage. She has never been on grass, probably can’t walk. She has never known love. Her life is fear and pain. The pups only survive for the almighty dollar, if they survive at all after the deplorable conditions. I got one of those pups, Daphne, if you remember back several articles. Unsuspecting people buy pups from pet stores, or off the Internet. Not even the pet stores know where the dogs come from. Criminals are good at playing games and making up papers and stories. They profit and the circle continues. People buy cute pups, from unknown origins, perpetuating the cycle.

When will we, as a nation, say “enough”? Greed and cruelty come in many forms, but those that prey on the helpless, whether the helpless is an elderly person, a young child, or a defenseless animal are predators of the worst kind. Certainly not worth our pity. They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and if there aren’t enough appropriate laws, we need to pass more.

These people are not legitimate breeders. They don’t care about the breed, the dog, or the person buying. They care about themselves. This is among one of the lowest ways to make a living. There are no circumstances in life that justify this type of behavior.

I was going to say that Missouri has more puppy mills than any other state. But it is a close race. How sad. Is that what Missouri, or any other state, wants to be known as-the puppy mill state? The only other incident that has me even more upset than the recent discoveries in Missouri was last week’s raid in Pennsylvania on the Amish puppy-mill. The Amish are purported to be responsible for up to 20% of puppy mills, and are also suspected of other animal abuse, including horses. That offends me on so many levels I can’t even put my disdain into words. I am so outraged I am speechless, and that is rare.

I want to go out of my way to say that I think the Missouri officials at the Dept of Agriculture and the Humane Society are stepping up to the plate, and trying their very best. They have made enormous strides this year. You guys do a great job. Thank you. But I sincerely hope that the rest of you are as mad as I am. This insanity has got to stop. Yes, I know this is only one of many horrendous problems/inhumanities we face in the United States as well as the world. I am aware of that. I am always concerned about all of those things, and I will always do what I can to help those situations. As you get older, you get more outraged at injustices. Right now, I am in the position to point out the cruelty of puppy mills-we do this to those that given the chance, would love us unconditionally. Shame on us.

The people involved in these endeavors are criminals. If you see a situation in your area you are concerned about-report it, even anonymously. Puppy farms thrive by being hidden, and the dogs die for the same reason. Right now there are dogs and pups suffering alone, hoping you speak up. They can’t.  Take a stand.
