It might be called the swine flu, but the first case of human/cat transmission of the H1N1 was confirmed in Ames, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine last week. The 13 year old cat apparently caught the virus from the residents of the household, all human. The cat became very ill, lethargic, and refused to eat-but did survive. This is the first case of this infection being passed to a household pet other than to two ferrets, both of which died, known in the world.
This older cat was an indoor cat. Although this incident wasn’t totally unexpected, it is unusual. Experts say use caution when exposing your pets to any human virus, especially H1N1, just as you would any family members. To date, there is no vaccine for this virus for pets.
