A study covered in the latest issue of Child Development shows that corporal punishment of babies can cause aggression and even congnitive delays in toddlers. I'm not particularly surprised by those findings (except maybe the cognitive delays, which researchers can't really explain either, although they theorize that it comes from a parenting style that uses less reasoning, which engages the brain), but I'm floored that the study reports an average of 2.6 episodes of corporal punishment per week for one-year-olds. I just don't even know what to make of that -- I am (obviously) completely against physical punishment, but I can see how a three year old can drive a parent to lashing out. Three-year-olds can be very difficult little people. But one-year-olds? Babies? Who, outside of the Pearl/Duggar fringe, thinks that smacking babies is a good idea? That it accomplishes anything? Jeez, I must really be out of touch with mainstream parenting, because this, frankly, shocks me.
