Are killjoy schools ruining Halloween? That appears to be the latest meme, with news anchors and columnists alike tisk-tisking school rules that ban weapons, gore, "sexy" renditions of traditional costumes, and whatnot.
On the one hand, it's easy to roll your eyes at "no zombie" rules, because, well . . . Halloween. The whole holiday is built around recognizing death and scary things. On the other hand, there are far too many people who feel that Halloween is a great time to bust out the blackface or "illegal alien" (now with a "Sexy!!" option) or any number of costumes designed to allow the wearer an excuse to let their hatred flag fly. Of course, most of these costumes are designed for frat boys and their ilk, but that doesn't mean that there aren't parents out there who think they are hilarious and edgy (and here you can read "edgy" to mean "a joke so cutting-edge that Bull Connor told it once in 1953 ." Which, come to think of it, is what "edgy" almost always means). Which is to say nothing of 15-year-olds with little sense and even less taste. So maybe this is just a case of a handful of jerks ruining the fun for everyone.
Case in point: a nipple tassle shirt for toddlers. Interestingly, the creator of the shirt made it in reaction to the increasingly young age at which little girl's are supposed to dress in a sexually appealing way. Her thinking was that babies can't be sexualized, so when you put that kind of shirt on a baby it makes the point of how inappropriate it is to sell, say, padded bras for kindergarteners. It's an interesting view, but perhaps Suzi Warren should watch an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras before deciding that babies can't be sexualized. Odds are that most people buying her shirt are going to match it with some baby high heels (and in a non-ironic way). Never underestimate the ability of people to be gross.
In the meantime, let's have a look at the "Inteligent Design" costume mentioned in the Jezebel article, because that sounds interesting. You don't have to be offensive to be funny and creative.
