Babes-in-arms, that is. And toddlers, and grade schoolers, and teens. I tell you what, if kids could vote, Obama could take a well-earned nap until election day and still win by a landslide.
Maybe I'm overestimating based on my kids' school; considering it's an alternative-education school which used to be known as Happy Hippie High, it's no big surprise that its population is pretty left-leaning. But while parental views could explain the 4 to 1 Obama wins in mock votes and adorable babies toddling around classrooms with Obama buttons, it doesn't explain the rows of lockers with posters declaring "If I Were 18 I'd Vote For Obama", which were handed out by a fifth grader. It doesn't explain the pre-teens who spent long hours collecting voter registrations in order to be able attend Obama's acceptance speech. And it sure doesn't explain the enthusiasm of my own kids, considering that their dad and I are only luke-warm supporters who were planing to vote third-party until Colorado inexplicably became a swing state. (And, not to veer too far off topic, but what is up with that, anyway? I'm one of the few people in the country who doesn't feel guilty about voting for Nader in 2000, because, come on, it's blood-red Colorado!) (And, heh, I'm watching MSNBC while I'm writing this, and they said McCain has a tiny little lead in Montana. Seriously, folks, the day an even moderately left-leaning centrist person of color wins Mon-freaking-tana is the day the entire Republican party needs to consider packing it in and moving to Belize, or something.)
Back on track, though -- what is it about Obama that resonates with the littles? I mean, the youth vote is has been a central strength for the Obama campaign, but that's college aged young adults. So, dear readers, what's the deal? Is this all just happening in my own little lefty enclave? And if not, what do you think it's all about?
I will say, while presidential candidates kissing babies has become a cliche, I've seldom seen a pol who seems to enjoy interacting with kids as much as Obama. I know I'm a sap, but that picture of him cuddling that beaming little boy makes me all teary. And as a mother, even though I know pictures like that are manipulative as hell, it's hard not feel warmly about a guy who clearly considers a hug with a cute kid a blissful break from campaigning. Maybe my support is more than luke-warm, after all.
