Swing, Daddy!

Family friendly concerts in Denver are pretty rare - usually they are held in venues where you have to wade through mounds of headbanging moshpitters or flailing Leftover Salmonheads trying to do the dance of the eternally stoned.  Tonight is one of the few times you can really get your groove on WITH your kids - with music that you and they will like - all in a family friendly setting made for the whole family to play.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is one of Denver's perennial favorites, playing Taste of Colorado for a number of years, and always putting on a great show.  I usually let my husband take the older ones in front, where they can really rock out, while the littler ones with more sensitive ears can still get their dancing in further back.

The music is always swinging - and is a fantastic show.  Although they usually play a couple of their more famous tunes ( You and Me and a Bottle Makes 3, 2000 Volts, The Boogie Bumper) this time they are playing the tunes of the legenday swing master, Cab Calloway.  They already had a hit convering his Hi-Dee-Hi

For those not aquainted with BBVD, In 1989, Scotty Morris, jaded by life as a young studio guitarist, decided to launch a three-piece jazz, blues and swing combo. The trio included drummer Kurt Sodergren and was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after a fateful meeting with blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of his concerts. "He signed my poster 'To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy'", Morris explains. "I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didnt really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me."In the years that followed, Morris and Sodergren formed the rest of the band which includes Dirk Shumaker on string bass, Andy Rowley on saxophone, Glen Marhevka on trumpet, Karl Hunter on saxophones and clarinet, and Joshua Levy on piano.

The concert is tonight, Monday 1st, at 5:30 at Civic Center Park - just follow the crowd, the blaring of the horns and the hip-swinging jive!
