The Wonder that is Craigslist in Denver

July 12, 1:15 AM

I know what you're thinking: "A post about Craigslist? Hello, and welcome to the 21st Century." But seriously, y'all, in the last few months I've gone from thinking "That's a cool idea" to "How did I function as a parent without this?" I mean, do you need a new love seat because some small person snuck hot chocolate on your (previously lovely) one? Or a couple of baby gates to keep your toddler off the stairs and your puppy in a tiled room? Or a 15th century astrolabe because . . . well, I think the astrolabe speaks for itself. Half an hour on Craigslist, and you're golden.

I recently procured a couple of really nice bookshelves for almost nothing, this weekend I'm planning to make a family weekend event picking free nuts and cherries, and when my PTSO held a carnival we found games on Craigslist for free (not to mention nice booths for the school cafeteria). I've decided to redo my yard, and it turns out that there are several kinds of bushes and plants for almost nothing, free fences, and about nine hundred posts of free landscaping rocks. It's all a bargin hunter's dream come true.

One great parenting section on Craigslist is the community activity sections, where you can find everything from single parenting groups to open teen soccer leagues.  Another good one is the whole section devoted to selling kids stuff, from baby furnature to finally finding another outlet for getting rid of your owngrown clothing other than handing them down to your nearest relative.

Just remember the old Craigslist adage: Deal locally, dont get scammed, and always trust your instincts.  The instances of scary things happening is extremely low with craigslist postings, but it can happen.  So stay aware and discover some creative  fun, or at least a great almost-new massive box of dolls heads for the whole family.

At right: Not this, thank all that is holy.It recently came to my attention that there exists a "food" item called a Jello mold. I have, in all my life, never encountered such a thing, although it is a popular enough thing at potlucks as to... Read More

This Weekend in Denver

June 13, 11:10 AM
This weekend is one of my favorite events of the year: the Denver Public Library's annual book sale. I tell you what, it's like Christmas, only even better, because the weather is so nice. I drove past today, and it looks like this year they are setting... Read More

Five Places to Save Money in Denver: An On-Going Series

April 27, 11:43 PM
I have a thing about thrift stores. What can I say -- I'm cheap, and I have a lot of fast growing kids. Plus, I like the idea of recycling where I can, so when I know a pair of jeans will be grown out of in a month or two, I'd rather buy them used than... Read More
