Over the past 5-10 years, there have been numerous reports about the growing obesity rate in children. According to an article on WebMD, one out of every five children in America is obese and this number, unfortunately, is only going to continue to grow, unless parents do something to help their children eat better. Sadly, with the weakened economy , parents are desperately trying to find ways to cut back on food spending, and often that means relying on fast food and unhealthy options. In general, the food that costs the least tends to be the least healthy for you, but what other choice does a parent have?

Locally and nationally, organic food shopping has gained in popularity as a means to help the fight against obesity.  Unfortunately, typically to eat organic, you have to spend more money.  However, in Charlotte, you can now have organic fruit and vegetables delivered right to your front door at a reasonable price. Absolute Organics  is an online service that allows those in Charlotte and the surrounding regions to choose their family’s favorite fruit and vegetables and have them delivered for free to their house. The delivery includes 6-7 different vegetables and 4-5 different fruits depending upon the price that best fits your budget. The box size ranges from $30 to $50, and can be delivered either weekly or bi-weekly, to also help keep the cost lower. If you are good at stretching meals, the $30 box delivered bi-weekly will provide plenty of healthy fruit and vegetables for a family of four.

Cooking with organic foods is no different from regular food and does not require any extra equipment or cooking technique.  Organic food simply means that the food has not been treated with pesticides and/or preservatives. As a result, you will find that your food tastes fresher and actually has more flavor than what you are used to, which might just make your children want to continue to eat healthier too!
