Hansel

Black cats and dogs have the most difficult time getting adopted, many shelters and rescues will tell you. Lots of theories why, including black animals look less friendly. And of course there are the superstitions about black cats.

With that in mind, several shelters and rescue groups around the country decided to highlight black cats and dogs in special Black Friday adoption events and reported considerable success.

As an example, on Friday,  the Pet Refuge of Mishawaka, Ind., adopted out seven cats and six of them were black or black and white, according to the SouthBend Tribune.

At the Humane Society of Parkersburg in West Virginia, a special adoption offer for black or dark colored cats and dogs resulted in 27 adoptions for the day with all but five black or brown on some other dark color, the News and Sentinel reported. And at the Richmond SPCA, four black dogs and three black cats were adopted as part of that shelter’s Black Friday event, WTVR TV broadcast.

If you’d like to be part of the ‘Black Friday’ adoption experience, here are some beautiful black and black and white cats waiting for homes right here in the Bay Area..

The Peninsula's Homeless Cat Network  is showcasing

Hansel, a four-year old Tuxedo, is an absolute joy to cuddle. On the playful side, a frisky game of "wand-under-the-bag" is right up this cat's alley. He is a charmingly mellow fellow, so any lonely kitty in your home will be fine with Hansel around.  Contact the Homeless Cat Network Hotline at 650-286-9013 or send an email to adopt@homelesscatnetwork.org.

Pin Stripe

At the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, you'll find:

Pin Stripe, an unaltered domestic shorthair female kitty, who is a little over 1 year old. She has a pretty white stripe and “bib” on her shiny black coat. She has a great outgoing personality: curious, friendly, and will be a loving, easy-to-care-for companion even to a first time pet owner. She can live with other cats, and possibly dogs too. She is an indoor only cat and should get along with children 6 and up.

Bennie

Bennie, a 6-year-old altered female. She has long black gorgeous hair, which she thoroughly enjoys having combed. She is an ideal candidate for a first time pet owner since she is affectionate and gentle. All the volunteers that visit her comment on how sweet she is! She's not big on playing (though an occasional ribbon will catch her fancy) and prefers petting and quietly sitting in a lap. One of her other favorite past times is watching out the window to observe the activities of the shelter from the safety of the playroom. She can't live with dogs and is unsure about cats so it may be best that she is an only pet. She will need to be kept indoors only. Children in the home should be at least 10-years-old. So if you are looking for a sweet and beautiful long-hair kitty, then please ask for gracious Bennie.

Luna

Luna is a 3-year-old altered female with a medium length dark silver coat. She is friendly, curious, and independent. A first time pet owner or a family with children will be fine for Luna. She is not sure how she will get along with resident pets, but will try. Fill your day and night with some rays of moonshine; ask for Luna.

Tiffany

Tiffany, a 2-year old altered Domestic shorthair female. She is an elegant, all black kitty who is curious, gentle, calm, independent, reserved, tolerant, friendly, and shy. That's a lot of personality in a petite little cat! She is seeking an indoor/outdoor home and could use a pet owner with some experience to help her adjust in a new home. If this is you, then come meet this greatest hit of a kitty.

PHS/SPCA is open for adoptions Monday through Friday, 11am to 7pm, and weekends from 11am to 6pm. It is located at 12 Airport Blvd., San Mateo next to Coyote Point Park. Visit www.PHS-SPCA.org or call 650-340-7022
