Job search golden touch
I have a television in my office that serves as an ambient noise maker. I rarely look at it unless a news story breaks or I hear the familiar voice of Sean Connery as 007. As my favorite of all the Bonds, Sean Connery’s Bond gives me license to take a break.
On any given day and at any given hour you can find a Bond flick. Yesterday, as the clock raced towards quitting time, I heard the distinct voice of one of my favorite villains, Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe). Goldfinger, circa 1964, is a timeless masterpiece and ranks top three on my list of favorite Bond flicks.
This article isn’t about a life lesson channeled through my favorite super spy. Rather, this article is about what we can learn from Auric Goldfinger as it relates to your job search. Frobe’s portrayal of Goldfinger was of a man of extreme intellect, a master of his golden domain and an expert in his field and not very shy about letting everyone know. It wasn’t enough to rule the world or send the globe’s economy into an economic paralysis. Goldfinger devised a plan to do it with panache, to show off his genius and expertise. That was why heads of crime syndicates from all over the world partnered with Auric. Well, there was that and the fact that they would die a gold-plated death if they didn’t fall into line.
How all of this applies to your job search
Most of us are experts in our field or at least in certain aspects of our work. Companies want to hire experts. So, how do you brand yourself as an expert? How do you make people take notice? The net has provided a platform for highlighting talented individuals. People with the midas touch in their field can develop a voice online, an ever growing testimonial of expertise. One of the fastest ways to do this is through a blog. Google loves blogs because blogs have fresh content.
Blog, your golden touch megaphone
I know a young lady that wanted public relations help. She was one of the best kept secrets in the fashion industry. When she went to work for a company, the company enjoyed big bumps in their bottom line. Almost a year ago she decided it was time to develop her voice and get some press. She wanted employers to chase her instead of
having to chase them. A blog was born, a fashion blog that was a showcase of design, trend forecasting and a specific lifestyle.
The blog turned into a tastemaker’s site. Requests for interviews, product placement, consulting gigs and even job offers started to stream in. A viral wave of traffic washed the site onto the bookmarks of fashionista’s, pr agencies and major companies across the planet. Within a month of showing off her take on fashion she had an average of 2000 visitors a day. Three months later that number tripled as job offers poured in and people lined up to meet this girl. Her expertise resonated with so many as she splashed the pages of Lucky Magazine, Teen Vogue and media outlets from all points.
All this girl needed was a place to show her off her expertise, to shout it from the rooftops. Many love her blog, some people don’t. It doesn’t matter. She will never have to look for another job again. The employers that she would want to work for know who she is and know where to find her.
She watched Goldfinger with me not to long ago. I tried to equate her expertise to Auric. She saw some connection but mostly thought he was a haute dresser. Always seeing things a little bit different, I guess that’s why I married her.
