The “King of Pop”, the one who brought to us the Man Behind the Mirror, Billie Jean, and Bad. Michael Jackson was a worldwide musician and one of the most successful influential entertainers of all time. His unorthodox contribution to the music industry made him a prominent figure in pop culture for over four decades.
Jackson alongside with his brothers, in 1964 made musical history when the Jackson 5 was formed. The Jackson 5 was the first in history to four major label singles “I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There” topping the American charts. These historians were the first black teens to appeal equally to white audiences.
In 1976, the Jackson 5 departed from their former label Motown to CBS except for Jermaine as he chose to stay with Motown. The Jackson 5 had declining sales from that point, which eventually were dropped from their label.
Michael Jackson’s solo album the 1982 album, Thriller besides being the best selling album of all time it remains the most talked about album until this day. Jackson went on to create classics throughout his career. He was credited with having transformed the music videos from a promotional tool into an art form. This man was a musical genus, his distinctive sound, vocal style and choreography inspired numerous artists no matter what genre, at the same time he was breaking down cultural, racial and generational walls.
Jackson have been inducted into the Rock and Hall of Fame twice, and gained multiple Guinness Word Records including the most successful entertainer of all time. Jackson achieved a great deal over his life time. He was also a notable philanthropist and humanitarian who saw a need to change the world through donating and raising millions to support 39 charities with the help of his own organization Heal the World Foundation.
When Jackson took a break from the music scene it was not the same, his present was refreshing. In March 2009, Jackson later announced at London’s O2 arena that he will make a comeback concert titled “This Is It”. There were about 50 sold out shows lined up to see the one and only, but how fate would have it, On June 25, 2009, Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion in Los Angeles; he died at the age of 50 after suffering from cardiac arrest.
AEG Live released a film of Jackson’s This Is It concert rehearsal on October 28, 2009. This film was limited to a 2 week run in theatres worldwide, due to popular demand the film is now extended through thanksgiving.
This Is It had a huge turnout in Arizona’s local movie theatre; hundreds of people were lined up in front of the Regal Cinema in Scottsdale, Arizona to say there last goodbyes to the pop sensation. While I was outside the theatre I asked one of M J’s fans, Linda Smith of Paradise Valley, Who was Michael Jackson to her? Ms. Linda Smith while in tears stated, “MJ was my favorite singer I will truly miss him”. Jackson a worldwide icon will be forever missed.
