Getting Chicago Cub outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley back on track offensively may take reuniting them with a former coach.
At least the eternal optimist Cubs fan can hope. Wednesday's announced signing of longtime Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo completes manager Lou Pinella's coaching staff for the 2010 campaign.
Jaramillo's credentials include his hitters netting four Most Valuable Player awards, three home-run crowns and three runs batted in crowns.
The Rangers' hitting coach since 1995, Jaramillo worked with Soriano in 2004 and '05 during the outfielder's two-year stint in Texas. Soriano posted a career high 104 RBI with the Rangers in '05.
Jaramillo also worked with Bradley in 2008, when the left-hander batted .321 and led the team in on-base percentage.(.436).
In 2009, Soriano posted his lowest marks in batting average, RBI and doubles since becoming an everyday player in 2001. This past season, Bradley posted his lowest batting average (.257) since 2002.
The 59-year-old Jaramillo was given a three-year, $2.42 million contract by the Cubs. Texas had offered him a one-year deal.
"Rudy Jaramillo is widely regarded as the premiere hitting instructor in the game," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said in a statement released by the Cubs.
