Pakistani military officials have confirmed new successes in the anti-Taliban offensive. Friday, Nov. 6th, 24 militants were killed in the town of Makeen, a key Taliban hotspot in South Waziristan on the Afghan border. Authorities also indicated that one militant was captured alive, although they have not identified who it was. The next day, today, Nov 7th, another 12 militants were killed in the region and a large stash of ammunition was seized by the Pakistani military.
Not all good news, however. Two suicide bombers also struck counter-offensive in Pakistani cities this week, as the military is making gains in the tribal regions. The cities of Rawalpindi and Lahore were both hit on Monday. The New York Times reports that the Rawalpindi attack too place, "...a few hundred yards from the headquarters of the Pakistani Army and outside a branch office of the National Bank of Pakistan," killing at least 35 and wounding 45 or more. The Lahore incident took place when, "...an explosives-laden vehicle blew up at a police checkpoint near the entrance to the city."
