Keeping up with zombie literature is important. An informed mind is not an undead mind, which is why I’ve compiled a baker's dozen zombie-related books for your reading pleasure. These books are all scholarly works, written for the advancement of zombie studies in our complex modern society. Stay informed, stay alive.
1. The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead, by Max Brooks. The would-by survivor’s handbook, this handy volume can tell you (almost) everything you ever wanted to know about surviving a zombie outbreak.
2. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance, Now With Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!, by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. 80% Jane Austen’s classic love story. 20% zombies. I can’t imagine a more perfect union.
3. Zombie Haiku: Good Poetry for Your…Brains, by Ryan Mecum. A day in the life of a zombie, told entirely in haikus.
4. The Walking Dead, by Robert Kirkman. A series of graphic novels about a ragtag group of survivors rebuilding society after the zombie apocalypse.
5. World War Z, by Max Brooks. An oral history of the zombie war, told by survivors from across the globe ten years after the war has ended. Harrowing first-hand accounts will keep you up at night, polishing your weapons and fortifying your home.
6. The Zen of Zombie: Better Living Through the Undead, by Scott Kenemore. Learn the secrets of zombie contentment and happiness through this self-help guide about being your own boss, functioning at your own pace, and devouring those who irritate you.
7. Day by Day Armageddon, by J.L. Bourne. The handwritten journal of one stressed-out survivor during the zombie apocalypse. The choices he makes could ultimately lead to life for another day, or eternal damnation as a walking corpse.
8. The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks, by Max Brooks. The brand new graphic novel, illustrating prominent zombie attacks throughout human history.
9. Zomnibus, by Chris Ryall, Shane McCarthy, El Torres, Ashley Wood, Chris Bolton, and Yair Herrera. A collection of three harrowing zombie stories, told in graphic novel format. From the seriously scary to the surreal (zombies vs. robots), the Zomnibus covers all your zombie needs.
10. I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson. Though more like vampires than zombies, the monsters in Matheson’s frightening tale torment the last man on Earth like it’s their job. Recently made into a film starring the ubiquitous Will Smith.
11. Z.E.O: How to Get A(Head) in Business, by Scott Kenemore. Frustrated corporate employees can find inspiration from a source they already relate to: Zombies.
12. Boneshaker, by Cherie Priest. When an Arctic drilling machine opens a gas pocket that turns anyone who breathes it into a zombie (mainly, the entire city of Seattle), what you get is a steampunk adventure to reclaim humanity. It’s awesome.
13. Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament, by S.G. Browne. Told from the point of view of a zombie, it’s a romance, it’s a gore fest, it’s all the problems the undead have trying to live a normal life.
