ERIN'S CUP OF KARMA
By Erin Feese

Erin Feese is a YourHub.com journalist.

It’s summertime! Along with catching some sun in your back yard, why not grow some of your very own herbs? They are not as labor-intensive as veggies and all you need is a container, some potting soil, either seeds or plants and a sunny windowsill. It’s really fun to grow stuff from seeds, but seedlings take time and patience to cultivate. They also are very delicate.

I recently roasted a few of my seedlings by leaving them in the sun too long, so I recommend buying a few herbs from your local supermarket, nursery or Whole Foods. Clay pots can be found for cheap at craft stores, and can be easily made into works of art with a permanent marker -- if you’re the creative type.

Here are a few of my fave herbs:

  • Basil: Easy to grow, can tolerate lots of sun and makes delish homemade pesto.
  • Lavender: Smells soooo good. Hang branches upside down to dry, then make your own sachets to put in your lingerie drawer. Oooh la la!
  • Rosemary: This is another fragrant one. It makes tasty potatoes. Dice up a half pound or so of red potatoes, drizzle with olive oil, toss in some rosemary and sauté until tender. Add salt and pepper to taste and you’ve got yourself an incredible side dish!
