As I reported earlier, the Utah Utes are finally prepared to name a starter and a backup in their yearlong search for a quarterback and it looks like Corbin Louks--the only player with any Division I snaps--may be the odd man out, although--naturally--nobody is saying anything.
According to information just received in a press release, some interesting pieces of news came out of this morning’s scrimmage that would decide the starter.
One, Louks did not do anything spectacular, although Coach Kyle Whittingham called him “athletic and confident“ in an interview with 1320 KFAN Radio. Two, the other quarterback candidates did; freshman Jordan Wynn has an “arm like Alex Smith” and junior Terrance Cain is “like Brian Johnson, he can run and throw the ball.”
Both had highlight reel plays, Wynn’s a 35-yard toss to wide receiver Jereme Brooks. Cain’s was a toss to running back Eddie Wide, who turned up field and ran 60 yards for a score.
Did those plays mean a starter will be named anytime in the next millenium? More from the press release:
Coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed that a starter and backup will come out of the scrimmage, once the coaches have the opportunity to review the film.
“All three quarterbacks did some good things and all three made mistakes,” said Whittingham. “After we watch film, we will come out with a one, two and three. Nothing will be set in stone—the order could still change—but at least we will have a starting point and can begin to get some continuity with the quarterback and the first string offense.”
Basically, what all of this means is that the coaches can change the pecking order at any time, which would lead us back to where we started.
So even though it looks like Louks may be the odd man out--if the information from the scrimmage is accurate--it’s more or less a temporary fix. But the Utes need a permanent replacement.
More info: Ben Vroman looks to be the leader in the race for placekicker, replacing Louie Sakoda. He booted seven field goals this morning, including two from 39 and 43 yards.
