It is not just McDonnell either. The GOP candidates for Lt. Governor and Attorney General are also beating the Democratic rivals.

From Public Policy Polling via RCP Blog.

Public Policy Polling’s first post primary look at the race for Governor of Virginia finds Republican Bob McDonnell holding a 49-43 lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds.

Several polls conducted immediately after the primary had shown Deeds moving into the lead but it appears his bounce has worn off.

Republicans hold similar leads in the races for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Incumbent Bill Bolling is up 46-40 on Jody Wagner in the former race and Ken Cuccinelli has a 45-38 lead over Steve Shannon in the latter.

For those of you unfamiliar with the candidates, McDonnell and Bolling are pretty conservative, but Cuccinelli, the A.G. candidate, is a dyed-in-the-wool, take no prisoners Reaganite.

The real problem for the Democrats is that they are hemorrhaging independents.

McDonnell’s lead is due largely to a 54/33 advantage among independents.

That's a 21 point lead in case you are counting. This mirrors what appears to be a growing problem for the Democrats. There is a poll out today from Ohio showing Obama with a 49% approval rating, a net drop of 25 points in 8 weeks. If we dig a little deeper, we see that independents are bailing on hopenchange.

"Ohio historically has been the prototypical swing state. One of the reasons Barack Obama won the presidency by such a wide margin is that he carried Ohio with 52 percent of the vote and captured the lion's share of independent votes," Brown added.

"Now, by a 48 - 46 percent margin, Ohio independent voters give the President a failing grade on the economy. These numbers indicate that he may be losing, at least for now, some of those who voted for him in November and should be an indication to the White House that his honeymoon with the voters may be ending."

One wonders when or if Obama and the Democrats would acknowledge that such a precipitous decline in support might be due to their policy proposals. After all, they are running the whole show. Gonna be tough to keep blaming Bush for this.
