A national restaurant chain with a significant local presence is adding to its reputation as a sustainable and environmentally friendly business. Chipotle restaurants announced that it will install solar panels on 75 restaurants in line with its already established policy of “Food with Integrity” campaign. As Chris Arnold of the chain states,” This move to outfit some of our restaurants with solar isn’t about jumping on the green bandwagon; it’s about continuing to do things in a better, more sensible way.”
Chipotle has demonstrated its commitment to the environment through numerous actions such as using sustainable building resources like energy efficient systems, including Energy Star kitchen equipment; tankless water heaters and photocell light control systems. It also takes advantage of recycled drywall, low VOC paints and E-glass in its building materials, which led to the Gurnee, Il restaurant to become the first national restaurant chain to be LEED platinum certified in the country.
Standard Renewable Energy approached Chipotle with the concept of large scale solar installation. The restaurant chain quickly agreed and the deal had been struck. Starting with the CEO, Steve Ellis, and down to the entire staff, everyone embraced this direction. Other locations that have been certified green are two in Austin and an additional LEED classified three can be found in Gurnee, Il, Long Island, NY, and Minneapolis.
As Chris Arnold proudly proclaims, “Now we’re adding this commitment to solar, which will make us the largest direct generator of solar power in the restaurant industry.”
