Have you ever heard the phrase “challenge yourself everyday.” It’s a great way to live.Often we forget this concept and live day-to-day doing the same old things, eating at the same predictable places, watching TV and, well, settling into a boring routine. Personally, I think it's hard to be bored if you live in the heart of New York City because, let’s face it, life is exciting the minute you walk out your door. You never know who you might meet. But working the 9-to-5 grind with a three-hour a daily commute, I found myself in a certain dead zone for awhile. So here's a little inspiration to spice things up (if you need it) to challenge your mind, body and spirit without even leaving New York, or the village for that matter.
1. Take a ride without leaving the dock.
Don't just go see a play, see a play on boat. The Woodshed Collective is producing The Confidence Man by Herman Melville (book to novel) on the Lilac at Pier 40.I did this a couple of weeks ago and found it to be a totally unique, fun and, well, an athletic experience.I went to this “play” 81/2 months pregnant, so running up and down on a boat felt extremely exhausting. But if you aren’t coming straight from a high fashion event and are comfortable standing, climbing up ladders and bending (all things pregnant women shouldn't do) all should be right with the world.Instead of sitting back and relaxing in your chair, you’ll be chasing actors around on a boat. Sound fun? It is, believe me. I hear that it’s sold out (tickets are actually free), but you can try just showing up and getting on the waiting list. It’s worth it.
Venue Name: The Lilac Venue Address: Pier 40 Venue City: New York Venue State: NY
When: 8:00pm Wed 9.16.09-9:30pm Wed 9.16.09 with 15 other show times tonight through 9.26.09
2. Fly through the air.
Did you know that Pier 40 also houses New York City's Trapeze School? I did this with some friends a few years ago (no I didn't do this pregnant don't worry - I'm not that crazy) and I can't tell you how scary and fun this is. Letting go is the hardest part, but once you do it, you'll feel great - you'll be flying!
3. Face the truth.
See the play Aftermath. Sure you may want to turn off the news when the war in Iraq is mentioned, but sit up for this play, it’s about the Iraqi civilians and how the war has affected them. It’s not just moving theatre, the acting is also superb. These are human stories and things you shouldn't turn away from. We hear about Iraq on the news and we know our side. Then there is the other side; what we've done to their country by invading. It's not that we don't know the truth, but seeing it presented theatrically helps to make it real and not just a statistic. It’s playing at The New York Theatre Workshop until the end of September.
4. Support an artist.
Go to a groovy women’s benefit. New Georges, a theater group that produces women playwrights is having a benefit next weekend to sponsor an artist. It sounds really fun and like great opportunity to network with fellow artists. Tickets at the door are only $10.
