Looking for something fun to do in NYC this summer? Let me be your tour guide. I have lived all over the city, but mostly in the Village for the past 10 years. We're lucky -- this year it hasn't gotten too hot yet. Here's a list of some fun stuff to do/look at to remind you that NYC is pretty cool, if you didn't already know that.
1. After work, take a sunset sail on the Hudson. Or, don't bother working and take a sail. (Sail NYC)
2. Take a stroll in the new Highline Park. The Highline Park is fantastic! Going after sunset is even better. We entered @ 20th street and a Jazz band was playing out of a nearby window. I have to admit the whole experience felt very serene and at the same moment very New York. This is an excellent way to see NYC from a completely different angle - from slightly above.
3. Check out the newly renovated Washington Square Park. It’s been under construction for quite awhile, but the new and improved Washington Square Park is simply breathtaking – the fountain is gorgeous. And, the removal of the mobile police unit says something: the park must be safer. I hear the mobile police unit has moved to Hudson and Christopher where the Transvestites are at war. So watch out when you are down there.
4. Take in some theater. As usual, there is an abundance of theater going on in NYC. Below is what I recommend for this week!
The Samuel French One Act Festival – an annual one-act festival where the best emerging playwrights from all over the country compete to be published in an anthology of short plays by the Samuel French Publishing company. It’s like Project Runway, but for playwrights and without television cameras. It’s lots of fun and you’ll get to see some great up-and-coming talent. (I’ve been a finalist in this festival twice).
The Summer Play Festival (SPF). This is a great festival where you can see some amazing full-length plays by emerging and well-known playwrights. The best news? Tickets are only $10.
“Mother” a new play about a family on vacation written by my very talented friend, Lisa Ebersole. The play stars Holland Taylor (of Two and a Half Men) and Buck Henry (writer of The Graduate).
“Twisted” a one-act festival produced by Rising Sun Theater Company.
“The Perfect Wedding” at the Bleeker Street Theater presented by Vital Theater Company. This play is a hilarious farce that will let you free your mind and just laugh. Don’t go if you are looking for intense drama or something deep. It’s light and forgettable, but you’ll laugh throughout.
