King Nut was the culprit of over 400 Salmonella cases.

In case you haven’t heard, 400 people in the US have gotten Salmonella from King Nut and Parnell’s Pride brand peanut butter—the brand sold in large quantities to big institutions.

The Daily Green’s Marion Nestle offers two ideas on how salmonella might have gotten into peanut butter: “Either the production lines were washed with sewage-contaminated water or somebody’s hands were really dirty.”

Representatives from Indianapolis Public Schools say they already don’t serve peanut butter due to potential allergies.

The Associated Press reported the peanut butter was only distributed through food service providers based in Ohio, Michigan, North Dakota, Minnesota, Arizona, Idaho, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Florida—but people have been infected in over 40 states, with three cases in Indiana. If your corporate kitchen is serving PB&J today, you can make the judgement call for yourself.
