Photo by thomasrdotorgTraining is an essential first step for new riders.  Those who forgo formal training and jump on a bike without a license or with only the minimum training necessary to pass the ‘M’ license certification testing do so at their peril.

Today, there are more options than ever for DC area enthusiasts looking to get their start in motorcycling.  The resources are here:

Virginia: http://www.learn2ride.com/

Maryland: http://mva.state.md.us/MVAProg/MOTO/default.htm

DC: http://dmv.washingtondc.gov/serv/dlicense/get_motoL.shtm - "Take and pass the DC DMV motorcycle demonstration skills test (by appointment only) or bring your original MD or VA motorcycle certificate of completion in lieu of taking the DC DMV motorcycle demonstration skills test (no appointment required)."

All riders without formal rider training should take a close look at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse.  You can learn the easy way, or the hard way.  For those who prefer to avoid learning the hard way, the MSF BRC is a fantastic way to get a solid foundation of understanding and basic skills.
