Now that Halloween is only a few weeks away, Birmingham is full of pumpkins. If you have not gotten your pumpkin yet, here are a few suggestions.
If you want the full "Patch" experience, go to the Great Pumpkin Patch in Hayden, www.greatpumpknpatch.com. They have hayrides and other activities for the children and there are a variety of sizes from which t o pick. Old Baker's Farm in Harpersville (www.oldbakerfarm.com) and The Grand Ole Pumpkin Patch in Clanton( www.grandolepumpkinpatch.net) offer a similar experience and are lots of fun too. If you are looking for more sophisticated pumpkins, the local farm stands such as Murphree's and Oak Street Local have more options and the Farmers Market on Findley Avenue has a great and less expensive selection. Look for the white Luminas, bumpy Knuckleheads, and light green Jarrahdale for a nice mix of colors. Whole Foods also has a great deal on good looking pumpkins - 3 for $13.
If you are cooking with pumpkins make sure you purchase the smaller ones that are easier to manage. Canned pumpkin is also a very useful and good option for baking. Try in soups, breads, cakes and muffins. The pumpkin adds moisture as well as a delicious fall earthiness.
If you plan to carve your pumpkins, make sure to save the seeds and roast them for a treat after the carving. Wash off the excess pumpkin flesh and pat dry. Toss with a little butter or oil and salt and garlic powder. Then roast in a 350 oven for about 20 minutes while watching carefully.
Enjoy Halloween and have fun carving and eating your pumpkins.
