His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Vancouver, BC this September to participate with people like Eckhart Tolle, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, his daughter Reverend Mpho Tutu, Peter Buffet and Maria Shriver in the Vancouver Peace Summit.

Here are some of the best Dalai Lama quotes, as well as other participants’, from the event.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama

  • “The real change must start with individuals, then family, then community. Then leaders, of course.”
  • “The leaders are supposed to teach us, but sometimes we should teach the leaders.”
  • “Media people should investigate everything. They should have a long nose and smell in the front and also in the back.” People can come across as good on the outside, but they must “smell” what’s going on behind as well.
  • “He [Desmond Tutu] is my spiritual brother, so anything he says I will support!”
  • “Everything, from trees and elements, everything has a right to exist, to grow.”
  • “Peace is the opposite to destruction.”
  • If we all look at each other from a fundamental level, “there is no reason to fight.”
  • “My future depends on the rest of the 6 billion human beings.”

Chris Wink of Blue Man Group

  • “Creativity has to be sewn into every single part of the education process.”
  • We have to “teach to the whole child.”

Eckhart Tolle (Author of The Power of Now)

  • “Dysfunction is part of us, too.”
  • “You can be present without always having to be thinking.”
  • On creativity: “There must be a vehicle ready for the creativity to flow into it.”

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

  • On being tolerant of all religions: When he gets up to heaven God won’t say, “’Oh Dalai Lama, you are a wonderful guy. What a shame that you are not a Christian!’”
  • You see people in the depths of war and you tell a joke, and they laugh. “Clearly, we are made of goodness.”

Reverend Mpho Tutu (Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s daughter)

  • “I believe that peace is the opportunity for all to flourish.”

Sir Ken Robinson

  • On creativity: “To be creative you have to do something. You have to put yourself to work. We have to teach it”
  • Inside schools, speaking to other children is cheating, “but in the real world, it’s collaboration.”
  • In this industrialized education, “we have lost the heart of education.”
  • Marihead Maguire
  • “If we want to educate the heart of children, we need to start with us.”
  • “Kindness develops compassion.”
  • “It’s such an awful temptation, to make out children just like us.”

Swanee Hunt

  • “If you stopped the war in Iraq for one month or in Afghanistan for one week, you could educate every girl in the world.”
