In its first-ever cruise ship report card on environmental safety, Disney Cruise Line was  ranked in last place of the top ten cruise lines by a California environmental group.

Given low scores in Sewage Treatment and Air Pollution Reduction were other Central Florida favorites, Royal Caribbean  and Carnival Cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean, also receiving an overall "F" ranking, got a bit higher score in  a couple areas but overall both cruise lines did not do well.

The environmental group Friends of the Earth, claiming to "champion a healthy and just world" gave it's highest score to Holland America Line followed by Norwegian Cruise Lines and Princess Cruise Lines to round out the top three.

As reported in the Sun-Sentinel,  the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said that "The so-called 'report card' released by Friends of the Earth is not based on science, law or the facts, but rather FOE's own arbitrary and flawed criteria," CLIA said the grades "clearly ignore the fact that our cruise lines comply with and in most cases exceed all applicable environmental regulations set by the federal government and other regulatory bodies around the world"

So don't go cancelling your cruise just yet .

Disney and most other cruise lines have long been honored for environmental safety by a number of other organizations worldwide.  Disney's Behind The Waves environmental education program, in place for quite some time, tells a very different story.

Going behind the scenes, Disney provides full disclosure of their environmental policies including videos showing how it all works and interesting stories ranging from how the coating they put on the hull helps conserve energy to how they use recycled cooking oil to power vehicles on private island Castaway Cay

Who else but Disney could turn garbage and environmental impact into a fun and magical story hosted by it's stable of stars?
