Many of us have seen movie clips of people getting massages but unless you've experienced an actual massage session you may be confused about what a massage actually is. Western massage is usually based on the Swedish massage techniques.

With it's long relaxing strokes and gentle rhythm, Swedish Massage is the most popular in the United States. So what is Swedish massage? Classic Swedish massage involves manipulation of the body's soft tissues - muscles, ligaments and lymphatic system.

There are five basic techniques used during Swedish massage; effleurage or stroking; petrissage or kneading; tapotement or percussion; friction; and vibration. Usually these techniques and strokes are used over the full body during an hour-long massage session that covers the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, hands, feet and head.

Most sessions last for an hour, although abbreviated 30-minute sessions are popular for working on specific areas of the body. If more time is desired, or there are areas of severe tension in the body, many practitioners will offer extended sessions as well. I personally feel like if I am going to set aside time to get a massage I want to make sure I take advantage of the opportunity and try to get a longer session scheduled.

The documented benefits of massage therapy include relaxing and strengthening tight muscles, improving circulation of blood and lymph, increasing joint mobility, helping to promote healthy skin, and helping to decrease the negative effects of stress.
