LA Galaxy defender and MLS Rookie of the Year Sean Franklin underwent sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany, the squad announced today. The Galaxy expect him to be ready for the season opener on March 22rd.
Franklin had been in national team camp at the start of January when the injury occured.

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, January 21, 2009) – The LA Galaxy announced today that defender Sean Franklin has undergone surgery to repair a bilateral sports hernia. The 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year, Franklin, was operated on by famed German surgeon Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck in Munich, Germany and is expected to return to Los Angeles on Thursday. The 23-year old is expected to be ready to play in time for the Galaxy’s season opener on March 22 against D.C. United.
The Galaxy’s first round pick (4th overall) at the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Franklin appeared in 27 games for the club as a rookie, making 26 starts and collecting one assist. Primarily a right back, Franklin spent much of his rookie season playing as a central defender and was voted the club’s Defender of the Year by the local media.
In November, Franklin joined the U.S. National Team for the first time in advance of the World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala, though he did not play in that game. He re-joined the National Team at the start of this month for a training camp at The Home Depot Center before suffering this injury.
