In the second installment of the What to wear guide: holiday parties, we tackle party attire for a second type of holiday party – the one hosted by your friend(s).
Unlike the office-sponsored version, you’ll have a little more flexibility (and freedom to showcase your personality) with what you wear when ringing in the holiday with friends. It’s still a party though – so get ready to look good! Read on for the guidelines and tips you need to know.
Similar guidelines apply to choosing your outfit (missed the office party edition? Read it here) –
The topic of dark wash, straight-leg jeans comes up a lot over here at Minneapolis Men’s Style, and we’ve gone so far as to recommend them as one of the top ten pieces you should have in your closet. Maybe you’ll believe us if we bring them up again, here? Unless, you’re hitting up a very posh, “formal attire only” club for this party – you can’t go wrong with these as your go-to piece on the bottom. Dark enough to dress up easily, comfortable enough to move around in, and flattering. Why wouldn’t you throw these on?

Staying in for dinner and games? Pair those jeans with a sharp sweater (think about an argyle option like this cashmere sweater at Express) or even a henley. Make sure things fit well, and stay away from sports-related or overly casual pieces. This means NO tee shirts.
A short etiquette-related note: DO be a good party guest. Show up on-time. Mingle. Offer to help, even if it's taking out a bag of beer bottles to be recycled. And, say thank you to your hosts. (As appropriate, a host or hostess gift may be a good idea. A six pack of Summit rarely goes amiss, nor a sunshine-y bunch of flowers....)
Going out? Take it up a notch with a sharp blazer in a touchable fabric. Corduroy, velvet, and even rich wool tweeds - all great choices. The venue and atmosphere will dictate whether you'll want to dress it down with a tee shirt, or dress it up with a button down.
(Don't forget about the option to give yourself something to look forward after the office holiday party by planning your own friend party! Arrange for a meet-up, and get double-duty out of your "business casual" party attire).
