Tammy Barley's roots run deep and wide across the United States. With such ancestors as James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau, she essentially inherited her literary vocation and her preferred setting: the Wild West. An avid equestrian, Tammy has ridden horseback over western mountains and has a special place in her heart for the Sierra Nevadas.
Love’s Rescue, book one of the new Sierra Chronicles, went into its second printing only five weeks after its release. The book has won second place in the Golden Rose Contest’s inspirational category, reached #11 on ChristianBooks.com’s historical fiction bestseller list, has received dozens of five-starred reviews, and is being considered for translation and distribution in Europe.
And now, it's time to Take 5 with Tammy Barley
Q: After becoming a published author, what surprised you the most?
A: I LOVE doing book signings! I dress in period costume—a hoopskirt and accessories which the main character, Jessica Hale, wears during Love’s Rescue and the Sierra Chronicles trilogy. The costume is a hoot to wear, and no one more than the people of Las Vegas knows how a costume can set a mood! The moment readers meet me and pick up the book, they know they’re destined to travel back in time and live the story’s adventure themselves, that they’re in for an all-new experience. The costume also gives people the opener to walk up to me and strike up a conversation about their own interests in the Civil War and the West and about their family history.
Q: What does your family think about your crazy career?
A: The kids love it because they get to be crazy too—I’m not the only one who gets to wear a period costume to book signings! As a matter of fact, one of the boys was named after a character in Love’s Rescue—a young ranch hand with more guts than years. I think the kids also think it’s fun that I don’t have a “regular” job, especially since they get to go on research trips—aka family vacations to cool places.

Q: What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a fledgling writer?
A: Whatever you love, DO IT. The pot at the end of the rainbow is the happiness of having followed your dreams.
Q: Scenario: You’re about to be dropped off on a deserted island. You can take along one survival item, one book, and one person (living or dead… but they’ll be alive on the island). What and who do you take?
A: Survival item: an Entenmann's truck stuffed with baked goodies. Book: Ashes in the Wind by the late Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. Person: Hugh Jackman. Make the most of every situation, I say.
Q: What’s the one far out sci-fi technology you’d most like to see become a household item?
A: I’m a major Star Trek fan! I think every house should have a holodeck.
