FEATURED MOMENT:

September 3, 1984- At the Kick-Off Classic in the Meadowlands, No. 10 Miami (Fla.) defeated No.1 Auburn 20-18 to score its second straight victory over the number one team in the nation (eight months apart) and extended the Canes win streak to 12 games. A late fumble by Auburn star and future College Football Hall of Famer Bo Jackson led to the go-ahead field goal by Hurricane freshman kicker Greg Cox.

OTHER NOTABLE DATES:

September 1, 1980: In the earliest Southwest Conference game ever scheduled, No. 10 Texas took down No. 6 Arkansas 23-16 in Austin. Down 7-3 in the second quarter, Texas coach Fred Akers took a fourth down gamble on the goal line and sent running back A.J. “Jam” Jones on a draw play that put the Longhorns up for good.

September 2, 1989: Southern Miss quarterback Brett Favre led the Golden Eagles to a stunning 30-26 victory over No. 6 Florida State in Jacksonville, Fla. Favre threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns, including a two-yard toss with 23 seconds remaining to score the go-ahead touchdown.

September 4, 1993: No. 16 Penn State notched its first-ever Big Ten victory with a 38-20 victory over Minnesota in Happy Valley. Nittany Lions’ receiver Bobby Engram scored on a short pass on the games’ first play from scrimmage.

September 5, 1981: Lamar (Texas) upset defending Southwest Conference champion Baylor, 18-17 at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. Lamar kicker Mike Marlow drilled a 42-yard field goal with three seconds left to shock the Bears.

September 6, 1990: In Boulder, No. 6 Colorado defeated Stanford 21-17 en route to their first ever national championship. Returning from a one-game suspension by head coach Bill McCartney, running back Eric Bieniemy rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns.
