This coming Wednesday, November 11, is Veteran's Day, and to commemorate the holiday, the Department of the Interior is waiving entrance fees to public lands under its jurisdiction- which includes all National Parks. In conjuction, the Department of Agriculture is also observing Fee Free Day at National Forests.

Many National Historical Parks dealing with American military history also provide opprtunities for hiking, including Fort Necessity, Valley Forge, Manassas National Battlefield Park, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania, Petersburg and Appomattox Courthouse. One little-known but interesting such location is Alaska's Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, located near two islands that were occupied by Japanese forces between 1942 and 1943 following the first invasion of U.S. soil since the War of 1812.
