Twenty-seven years ago in 1982, Kenneth Cole decided that he wanted to open a shoe company. With limited money, he started production in Europe to design his first collection of shoes, then came back to the U.S. to sell them. Cole wanted to showcase his line of shoes at Market Week at New York's Hilton Hotel, but was unable to purchase a hotel room or showroom to display his work. Instead, he purchased a trailer from a friend in the trucking industry and parked it two blocks from the hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Permits for trailers were only granted to utility and production companies, so the innovative Cole changed his company name from Kenneth Cole Incorporated to Kenneth Cole Productions, and applied for a permit to shoot a full-length film entitled "The Birth of a Shoe Company". In two and a half days, Kenneth Cole Productions sold forty thousand pairs of shoes, while chronicling the beginning of the company on film.
To this day, the company and acclaimed American fashion house is still named Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. and serves as a reminder to the importance of resourcefulness and innovative problem solving. Kenneth Cole Productions now sells men's and women's clothing and accessories, and is also an avid supporter for AIDS awareness and research. Kenneth Cole is said to be the first in the fashion industry to do so.
Today, both Kenneth Cole and Marie Claire Magazine are hosting an event in San Francisco for the 925 Technology Footwear Event. A shipment of an overwhelming demand for 925 Technology Silver Edition shoes has been rushed to Kenneth Cole's San Francisco Union Square store, and the legendary Kenneth Cole himself will be there to sign them.
