Desperate times call for desperate measures. For Georgia's game against mighty Florida in Jacksonville, that meant black helmets for the first time ever and black pants for the first time since 1998.
Florida added to the color combo by wrapping its blue shirts around Georgians, or running through said Bulldogs. The result was 41-17 and black-and-blue in Dawg Nation: beat up, bruised and bummed about a rivalry gone awry and a season headed down the drain.
With two weeks to prepare, Georgia was guilty of eight first-half penalties and four second-half turnovers. The magnifico Tebow broke Herschel Walker's SEC career rush touchdown record. (A bit bogus, seeing as how Herschel's bowl TD didn't count and Tebow's do. On the other hand, Tebow has plenty of games left to get four more and legitimize the mark.)
Joe Cox, though not all his fault, apprenticed for years for an opportunity to steer the Dawgs' offense, but he isn't cutting it. With little help, by the way, to an offensive line that started its fifth combo of the season Saturday.
The dizzying outcome left coach Mark Richt spouting post-game nonsense: "I think men in general want respect. I women are made where they want love." Huh? This might be what Richt would call a teaching moment, but stay on topic, dude.
The Bulldogs wind up -- or wind down -- with Tennessee Tech, Auburn and Kentucky at home, followed by an increasingly likely loss to Georgia Tech. Since T-Tech is a lower-level school, UGA might have to beat Auburn and Kentucky just to get to six FBS wins and qualify for a bowl.
Wherever it is, leave the black unis in storage.
