The Boston Red Sox square off against the New York Yankees in a Grapefruit League game in a few hours, but if you weren’t paying attention, you just might have missed it.

Sure, we know A-Rod is out with a bout of Mike Lowell disease (a torn labrum) after nearly having come down with a case of Roger Clemens syndrome (“steroids?” “no way!” “OK, way.”). But we’re not nearly as consumed with what’s happening in Tampa and the Bronx as we were just a few years ago.

I don’t know about you, but I miss the feel-it-in-the-gut kind of rivalry it once was. Can the Sox’s pair of 21st century championships really have left us with the kind of casual interest in the Yankees that we once reserved for the Rays? Say it ain’t so!

It may be only a spring training game, but until recently, that didn’t matter – it’s still the Pinstripes vs. the Crimson Hose at the ballyard, it’s still Wakefield vs. Wang on the hill, it’s still Ortiz vs. Rodriguez at DH.

Wait … you say it’s John Rodriguez and not Alex? I guess you’re right: that old rivalry really isn’t what it used to be. At least not for the time being …
