Many of us sit at a desk or in front of a computer all day. We tend to let stress overwhelm our daily work lives even if we love our jobs. When we get home in the evening, we eat a quick dinner and sit down on the couch, telling ourselves that we deserve time to relax before we exercise. Instead, we turn on the television and the next thing we know it’s past the time we should have gone to bed to keep from being tired the next day.
We’re going about relaxation the wrong way. When our daily work life gets too stressful, we should get up and go for a short 10 minute walk. The time that we spend on the walk helps us take a break from the stress. This doesn’t mean that the stress will go away; instead it’ll be easier to deal with once we get back to our desks.
If you look at the MyPyramid.gov website, you’ll notice it states that you should exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days a week for a total of at least 2.5 hours of exercise a week. If you don’t sit in front of a computer, you might think that the movement you get during the day is enough exercise. Working up a sweat can be good, even if you aren’t formally working out.
However, if you are having trouble losing weight, or if your weight has stayed steady even though you are watching what you’re eating, then you need to add exercise. Studies have shown that even three short 10 minute walks over the course of a day will help increase your metabolism to burn more calories and start the scale moving downward once again.
