It's finally here!
Training camp officially open for the St. Louis Blues this weekend and after many months of discussion and predicitions, the team finally takes to the ice.
Here is a preview of what's happened and what's to come in 2009-10 for Blues fans.
1. Offseason review:
- The Blues shored up the biggest need on the team with the signing of back-up goaltender Ty Conklin. Starter Chris Mason proved to be the guy down the stretch and now-defunct Manny Legace proved to be a head scratcher.
2. What is the Blues' biggest strength?
- With the return of Erik Johnson and the progress of Alex Pietrangelo, the defensive core of the team is taking shape for the future. When you throw in Carlo Colaiacovo and Roman Polak combined with the experience of Barret Jackman, the Blues have some pop on the backline. Even without Eric Brewer, who's return has turned into a big question mark for the season.
3. What is the Blues' biggest weakness?
- Defensive support from the front line could spell doom for the Blues. Andy McDonald, Brad Boyes and David Backes had a combined -36 last season. If they don't improve, the Blues could be on the downside of many close games and it could ultimately cost them a playoff berth. In a recent chat session on stltoday.com. Head Coach Andy Murray noted the importance of being a plus player for the St. Louis Blues.
4. Who is the most important player for the Blues this season?
- In the absence of Brewer, Erik Johnson will be called upon for all types of duty. He will see the opposition's top line night in and night out along with time on the power play and penalty kill. Will his torn ACL hold up over the course of the year? Hopefully, but any injury to the Blues' former No. 1 draft pick would be a backbreaker.
5. Which player do you think will surprise fans this season?
- Look for Paul Kariya to bounce back and return to his old self. After two hip surgeries last season, Kariya was looking to dress during the playoffs, but the Blues failed to make it that far. However, Kariya showed signs of bouncing back from a sub-par 2007-08. In the first 11 games of 2009, he registered 15 points and was a menace on the PP. Look for more of the same if he can remain healthy.
6. Predictions for the 2009-2010 season?
- With the added injuries and goaltender questions hindering the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, respectively, look for the Blues to compete near the top of the Central Division, but falling just short of the Wings. The Blues will make the playoffs and make it to the second round, but bow out before making any real noise.
This season will be another stepping stone for the Blues towards the real goal of a championship. It is a big year for both the kids and veterans to promote that winning atmosphere in St. Louis. It started last year, can it continue in 09-10?
