Chrysler Group LLC announced Friday that it will keep the explosively powerful Dodge Viper SRT10 sports car in production and it is no longer looking for a buyer of the Viper’s assets.
Production of the $90,000 sports car was scheduled to cease in December, but the company had a change of heart.
“The Dodge Viper has successfully captured the hearts and imagination of performance enthusiasts around the globe, said Mike Acavitti, Dodge’s president and chief executive officer. “We are extremely proud that (it) will live on as the iconic leader image leader for the Dodge brand.’
Production of the V-10-powered Viper began in May 1992. The fourth-generation Viper SRT10 was introduced in 2008 with a more powerful V-10 engine and 30 exterior and interior color combinations.
For 2009, the Viper’s engine produces 600 horsepower. It can sprint from a stop to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and hit the 100-mph mark in a few ticks over 12 seconds.
More than 25,000 coupe and convertible versions of the Viper have been built since the car came on the market.
