Production of the Chevrolet Volt is expected to begin in late November or December next year, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson has told members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
Henderson's estimate was contained in a Detroit Newsstory reporting on the chief executive's conference call Friday with the state’s two senators and most of its House members.
The hybrid electric vehicle is considered an important element in GM's comeback plans.
According to the News, Henderson also told the group:
• General Motors market share is 19.7 percent and that must be increased for GM to survive in the long run.
• The company is willing to take another look at the closing of dealerships that were profitable but did not meet other criteria.
• No more than one percent of buyers are expected to make use of the company’s 60-day return policy, which has been extended to Jan. 4.
Rep. Pete Hoekstra noted that Ford was recently recognized for its improved quality and said he didn’t think GM has not done enough to address quality concerns.
Greg Martin, a GM spokesman, said J.D. Power and Consumer Reports have noted improvement in the quality of GM vehicles, but “we’re not satisfied with our results and we recognize that we have to work hard to overcome a perception gap.”
