Get into the Halloween spirit by checking out weird and scary locations right here in South Jersey. Some of these places are said to be haunted, some are spooky and some are just a little bit different. Exploring local legends always makes for a fun activity on a spooky October night.
The Cookie Jar House
Glendora, NJ
The cookie jar house is not scary, but it’s still pretty neat. This house in Glendora has no corners. The cookie jar house was built in 1947. To this day, this Glendora home remains the only cookie jar shaped house in the entire United States.
The Atco Ghost
Atco, NJ
Rumors have circulated for years about a young boy once killed by a drunk driver while playing with his basketball in the middle of the street. This road, Burnt Mill Road, is off of the Old Whitehorse Pike, and is unfinished, eventually trailing off into the Pine Barrens. Legend has it that if you wait there at midnight with your headlights on, you can see the ghost of the little boy.
Haunted Prison
Mount Holly, NJ
The Mount Holly prison (now the Mount Holly prison museum) is said to be haunted by the spirits of the many prisoners that had been violently executed there years ago. The Mount Holly prison has gained much media attention being featured on Ghost Hunters and other spooky shows. Local ghost hunters have reported EVP activity and have taken pictures of mysterious orbs in the prison. The prison is usually decorated for Halloween during October. Ghost experts recommend investigating the prison for real spirits on a misty day when the prison is not decorated.
Jersey Devil Hunt
Wharton State Forest, NJ
The Jersey devil is the most famous legend in all of New Jersey. For hundreds of years, state residents have believed that a frightening creature lives deep in the Pine Barrens and comes out to terrorize New Jersey residents. Most people who live in New Jersey know someone who has attempted to search for the Jersey devil. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance now hosts a safe and fun tour about twice a month which allows people to search for New Jersey’s biggest celebrity.
