Flautas Mexicanas

Grand Prairie is home to the only DFW location of Monterey's Little Mexico.  A Houston based chain, Monterey's has locations in Texas and Oklahoma which make their Tex-Mex dishes more genuine.  They recently changed their name from "Monterey's Tex-Mex Cafe" to placate Oklahomans, who apparently have some dislike for the word "tex-mex".  Go figure.

Located just off Main Street, at Dalworth and 6th Street, Monterey's is situated in a prime spot for downtown lunch crowds.

Drink specials are numerous.  From the Coronita (5 for 5.00), to the Green Iguana Margarita, there's something for everyone over 21.  Soft drinks include, but are not limited to, the ubiquitous sweet tea, raspberry tea, and Dr. Pepper.

Chips, sauces and a small guacamole salad

Start with a unique appetizer, like the White Lightening Queso (S. 3.99, M. 5.99, L. 7.99) made with tequila, or the Guacamole Salad (S. 3.99, L. 5.29).  Both of which are great for dipping the complementary chips.  There is also free salsa and tomatillo sauce served upon being seated.

Stuffed Avocado (8.99) is the newest Tex-Mex special on the menu.  It includes grilled fish, shrimp and veggies covered in chile con queso inside a halved avocado. If you're not into the mariscos, there are authentic Mexican dishes like the Flautas Mexicanas (7.79).  This tasty entree consists of:  Three crispy chicken flautas, topped with cheese and tomatos; Mexican rice; refried beans; avocado slices; and sour cream (upon request).

Signage visible from Main Street.

A recent addition to the menu is the Lighter Side section.  Choices here range from the Chicken Wrap (5.99) to the Veggie Burrito (6.99).  There are also daily specials and a smaller portions menu.

Parents should take note that kids eat free on Tuesdays, with purchase an adult entree.

After your server brings the check, you are expected to pay at the register, where you can also pick up a to-go menu.

The exterior of this location is unassuming, but the interior is similar to many other Mexican eateries. The dining area is clean, except for the ashtrays in the smoking section, of course.  There is a wall between smoking and non-smoking, and televisions in both sections.  Service is fast, attentive, and polite.
