There are many places to get good coffee in Gettysburg. Seasons Bakery, for instance, has the best coffee in town, while the Ragged Edge and Avenue Restaurant are also good bets. However, there is one café in a town near Gettysburg that is worth the trip if you are a serious coffee drinker or just want an added adventure. This destination is the New Oxford Coffee Company and Visitor's Center.
Making it to the Coffee Company is simple enough. From York Street in Gettysburg, take Route 30 east until you arrive in New Oxford. The drive takes about 15 minutes or less. New Oxford has a circular townsquare much like Gettysburg's (only bigger). Coffee Co. is located on the circle. Parking can be found along the streets in most directions, and a series of stern signs force cars to yield to pedestrian traffic in the square.
Once inside, visitors are immediately flooded with a bohemian café vibe. Coffee Co. is filled with interesting tables and art, as well as soft couches and chairs. Their coffee list hangs in wood on one wall, and the whole establishment holds a warm feel. The baristas are friendly and willing to wait while you ponder the large menu.
Coffee Co., like many cafés in the area, offers a case full of local baked goods. These are hit or miss. Most are generally standard fare, and they are pricey for the amount of food you get. Some don't taste as fresh as they could be. True bakeries such as Seasons do a much better job in this matter. However, what the café has in its food case differs from day to day, so if hunger strikes, it may still be a valid option.
Coffee addicts will not be dissapointed. The café has an impressive list of concoctions. Their coffee is a blend unique to the café, and it shows. Unlike more standardized brands, Coffee Co.'s blend has a multi-tonal flavor, which results in a smooth drink without the loss of coffee's familiar bite. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of this blend is lost in specialty drinks such as their Mocha Freeze frozen coffee, which, quite frankly, could be made with any type of coffee, since the flavoring overpowers the base.
Still, Coffee Co. provides a wide variety of options, one of which is the strongest coffee drink in the area. The drink, aptly called "The Red Eye Espresso," is a combination of their standard blend mixed with several shots of espresso. The shots increase in number as the size increases, making the largest size dangerously caffeinated. This drink is a caffeine addict's heaven on earth. Skip it, though, if you have a sensitivity to caffeine or any stomach problems.
Tea fans will also enjoy this stop. Coffee Co. carries over a dozen uniquely blended, loose leaf teas to choose from. Backporch Blend, for instance, is "A black tea with a raspberry and orange taste with raspberry bits and orange peel," according to the Coffee Co. website. Coffee Co. also offers 20 different flavors of Italian soda and five flavors of Fizzy Lizzy's carbonated fruit juice, as well as many decaffeinated options. Because of this huge menu, as well as the quality of the drinks served, Coffee Co. is well worth the short drive to New Oxford.
New Oxford Coffee Company and Visitor's Center is located at 16 Center Square, New Oxford, PA. It is open 7 days a week and offers free Wi-Fi access. To contact this restaurant, call (717) 624 - 4802.
