There are many restaurants that claim to be pubs in Gettysburg, and most sell good food at reasonable prices.  Some, like Garryowen Irish Pub, even provide authentic pub grub, taken hand-in-hand with good service and great alcohol.  Unfortunately, The Pub and Restaurant doesn't quite measure up.

The Pub has an excellent location.  Its bar and dining room entrances open to Lincoln Square, or "the Circle," and passersby can look in the windows to see eaters enjoying their meals.  The building itself is quite pretty.  During the holiday season, the Pub is beautifully covered in strings of yellow lights.  On weekends, the Pub is only a few blocks away from Gettysburg College, making it a popular bar stop.

There are a number of drawbacks, however.  Firstly, during peak dinner times, the wait for a table can be excrutiatingly long (think one to two hours).  On weekend nights while the college is in session, the bar can be completely inaccessible.  This is due both to the proximity to the college and to the small size of the bar.  Other bars close to the college, such as The Flying Bull Saloon and The Blue Parrot Bistro, don't have this problem as much due to their size and efficiency.

Secondly, the theme of the restaurant is a bit confusing.  While the place calls itself a pub, it is covered in roughly-drawn depictions of fairies and children.  Moreover, since the restaurant attempts to offer "finer casual dining," as stated by its website, the dining hall does not really portray this intention.

Thirdly, the food is overpriced for the quality.  The food is decent, but if you're dining on a budget, you may be dissapointed.  While the large portions could help to justify the price, and the food is not even close to the price of food at some other restaurants in town, I find that the food and service is simply not worth the price.  For instance, the burgers and cheeseburgers are far more expensive than those at similar restaurants in the area, as are the alcoholic mixed drinks.  The strawberry daquiris are very weak, moreover, and don't even taste good.  The waiters and waitresses can also be inattentive, and my order has been messed up on more than one occasion.

Some good things to order include the potato skins, the spinach and artichoke dip, the Jamaican coffee (alcoholic), and many of the desserts.  Some things to avoid are the higher-priced pastas and seafood.

In general, dining at The Pub will likely not result in a horrible time.  At worst, one may leave with a mediocre experience.  However, when considering the diverse assortment of eateries in Gettysburg, visitors may want to assess their options before deciding to eat at The Pub.

The Pub and Restaurant is located at 20-22 Lincoln Square, Gettysburg, PA.  To contact this restaurant, call (717) 334 - 7100 or email ThePub@cvn.net.
