TROY, NY -- Michael LoPorto, prominent local restaurateur, on Tuesday won election to an at-large seat on the City Council.
LoPorto, owner of LoPorto's Ristorante on Fourth Street downtown, was making his second attempt on the Democratic Party line for elective office. His victory, with the third-largest number of votes according to unofficial tallies, helped his party maintain control of the City Council as it gained one seat for a 7-2 majority.
Clem Campana again was the top vote-getter, whuch automatically made him council president. Partymate John Brown was second.
LoPorto, a vocal critic of incumbent Mayor Harry Tutunjian, has opposed the creation of a downtown Business Improvement District (BID) in the city since the idea was first raised.
“It was hard fought,” LoPorto said of the campaign. " ... It's a great day. It’s not a victory for me, it’s a victory for Troy.”
