PORT BYRON, NY -- Magdy's Eats and Sweets is the newest business in this Cayuga County village.
The restaurant, owned by Magdy Abd El Hadi and Ali Abou Eid, opened Friday at 72 Utica Street at the intersections of Routes 31 and 38 in the center of the village.
The 70-seat casual establishment is open every day for breakfast and lunch, and serves dinner Monday through Saturday. A bakery is expected to be operating by November, turning out breads, pastries and cakes.
Dinner and lunch include such traditional fare as seafoods, steaks and pastas as well as burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips and subs.
The partners, cousins from Egypt, bought the building at auction several years ago and slowly renovated it. El Hadi, who lives in Auburn, had cooked at the Port Byron Diner for about 15 years. Abou Eid has two similar businesses in the Poughkeepsie area -- Happy Days Cafe in Millbrook and Adams Diner in Dover Plains.
