Running from Baltimore to Annapolis

People often ask, quite innocently:  "How far is that marathon?"  Of course, the answer is always the same.  Every marathon is 26.2 miles.  No other distance is a marathon.

It's hard to conceptualize, though, exactly how far 26.2 miles is.  It's 46,145 yards.  It's 138,435 feet.  How far is that, though?  Here are some distances to which you could relate the distance of the marathon:

Empire State Building

Running a marathon is the same distance as:

  •  Making 55 round trips to the top of the Empire State Building.
  • Running the length of a football field - 461 1/2 times.
  • The distance between Baltimore and Annapolis, almost exactly.
  • Scaling and descending Mount Everest (assuming a straight vertical climb) 2 1/2 times.
  • Circling the ancient Roman coliseum 175 times.
  • Running the width of the Grand Canyon at its widest one and half times
  • The distance from the Western border to the Eastern border of Rhode Island on the latitude of Providence.
  • The mileage from Baltimore to the northern tip of Bel Air, MD
  • Running around a standard track 105 times
